RMIT x Disney

We're Done with Fur

© Disney 2021

To celebrate the release of Disney's anticipated film Cruella in 2021 they partnered with RMIT students to create pieces inspired by the contexts of Cruella. My piece titled 'We're Done with Fur' was chosen to be displayed in a Melbourne Central Shopping Centre exhibit.

Working with Disney was such a pleasure to create this custom coat. I wanted to retain some references from the Cruella I knew growing up from the 1961 animated Disney film 101 Dalmatians whilst bringing some modern flair for the new film.

My inspirations stem heavily from the punk movement of the 1970s and the subcultures that came before it that influenced its style. Reinventing Cruella's iconic shaggy coat was my starting point, however, this refined version takes style points from the mod subculture of the 1960s.

The crosshatched diamond pattern was one I illustrated digitally and then had printed on white velvet. I wanted it to appear rough and almost hand drawn to bring in that DIY aesthetic.

The coat overall though is very tailored and crisp as I felt it important that this updated coat was chic, modern and well made.
